This summer, Kensington Market Toronto will play host to the first installation of SUPAFRIK, an experimental “pop-up” concept: part art exhibit and part fashion boutique. The installation takes place from July 15 – 31 at the Hotshot Gallery (181 Augusta Ave). Hot on the heels of the popular Afrofest festival, SUPAFRIK will feature the works of artists, designers and photographers that draw inspiration from the African continent. The exhibit is curated around the theme of “Urban Contemporary Africana” and will showcase artwork and products that re-contextualize and re-imagine traditional African aesthetics and traditions with a post-modernist eye. SUPAFRIK is the brainchild of Toronto fashion designer Chinedu Ukabam of the clothing label Chinedesign. Chinedu travelled to New York, Paris and London collecting some of the unique items for sale at SUPAFRIK and documented the journey on the SUPAFRIK blog (www.supafrik.com).
We are currently looking for complementary artwork to feature in the gallery for the duration of the SUPAFRIK pop-up shop. We are interested in all styles (realistic to abstract) and formats (digital to traditional media, installations are also welcome) but there has to been an element of African inspiration. Feel free to add a note explaining your inspiration if you do not think it is immediately apparent. Artwork selected will be featured in the gallery from July 15 – 31 and will be available for sale to the public.
