MUST SEE: “Better Angels: A Parable”

Masterfully written by Andrea Scott and directed by Nigel Shawn Williams, “Better Angels: A parable” is the must see play of The Summerworks Theatre Festival currently taking place in Toronto

Better Angels is the story of Akosua (impeccably played by Akosua Amo-Adem), a young Ghanaian woman who moves to Toronto to work as a nanny/housekeeper for Leila and Greg. After six months of working, Akosua finds herself trapped in modern day slavery, uncompensated for her work and unable to leave the house.

Summoning the cunning of Anansi, the West African spider god, Akosua turns the tables on her friendly captors as she unravels the web of lies they have woven into the fabric of their lives. Andrea Scott’s gift of writing humorous dialogues that dig into the uncomfortable nuanced dynamics of relationships, race and class, is on full display here at Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace.

If you are not familiar with Ms. Scott’s work, this is a good time to get acquainted. Opening night was sold out and there are only a few showings left. Tickets are available at summerworks.ca
