*Toronto* We’re kicking off 2017 with another “Back to Back” edition of GUMBO (2 events in 1 night). This time last year we took you from FNLROM at Royal Ontario Museum to Tattoo on Queen West. This year the party starts at 7pm on the ice rink at Harbourfront(25 Queen’s Quay) for a GUMBOfied DJ Skate Night featuring DJ Revy B and at 11pm it moves over to The Vault, a few minutes away, for a Masquerade Jam. Masks are mandatory at the jam until 1am. Style code: Have fun with your outfit. Swanky. Dapper. Daring. Funky. Festive. Whatever floats your boat.
#WeAreGumbo is about connecting the musical dots widely and authentically. February is carnival time from Trinidad to Brazil and it’s also Mardi Gras season in New Orleans where our special guest DJ RQAway calls home. Last time we were in his city for GUMBO 3, he lit up the dancefloor with the energetic hometown sounds of Nola Bounce and Second Line brass band music and now we will give you a taste of New Orleans in Toronto! S-Quire will hold it down with the Soca and Revy B will keep the Afrobeats flowing. A carnivalesque Afro-diasporic journey into sound taking place inside a transformed bank vault? You don’t want to miss!

WHAT: SUPAFRIK Pop-Up Shop/Gallery WHEN: Sunday September 21st
ONE DAY ONLY: 1PM – 7PM WHERE: TAC Art/Work Gallery, 568 Richmond Street West, Toronto
SUPAFRIK returns to its Toronto roots after well received installations in Washington DC, London and Paris. With a limited edition focus, SUPAFRIK #7 will feature a collaborative one-off capsule collection from Chinedesign and Parisian conceptual artist MyriaMMaxo (renown for her riotously colorful “objet d’art” waxprint teddies) who will also be in town to launch the collection. Chinedesign’s #TheBravingRitual collection, the label’s first foray into eclectic winterwear combining tartans and indigo-dyed mud cloth will also be exclusively available for made-to-measure custom orders. Also featured: luxurious handwoven scarves from newly-minted Ethiopia-based African Design Hub label which will be making its Canadian-debut at SUPAFRIK roster. SUPAFRIK will also feature a tasting menu of Afro-fusion culinary delights by Zimbabwean cook Rufaro, original artwork by Oluseye and a preview of BLKKANGAROO’s BLKKMARKET, its first capsule collection of structured t-shirts and unisex kaftans inspired by the color, texture and vibrancy of the West- African market experience.
For bargain hunters, there will also be discounted goodies from the online store from such as UK based clothing “Made in Africa” label Chichia London (Beyonce is a fan!) whose street-smart collection is ethically manufactured in Tanzania using traditional kanga textiles as well as fashion sneakers from Mos Def’s new favorite shoe brand SAWA, designed in Paris and made in Addis Ababa.

Right from the start, art has always been a big part of the SUPAFRIK pop-up experience and this summer is no exception. We have carefully selected a group of artists who we feel encapsulate a forward-looking and very modern interpretation of African inspiration. There are two names you might already be familiar with from February’s installation at Afrotropolis Wanderland and another two that you should know about. We are very excited to be showing their work for the next two weeks at 627 Queen St. W and we hope to see you at the gallery soon. Continue reading
Thank you to all the artists that sent in submissions for the SUPAFRIK gallery.
